Worked all right for me.
It worked when I copyed and pasted the url into my browser. Clicking
on the link from my news reader resulted in a 404 error.

Odd, it works for me. It's a big fat Irish dude with very little hair
on his head lighting a pipe with a brass Zippo with half a pint of
Guinness in a glass next to him. He is wearing a tan jacket with brown
trim and a yellow polo-style shirt.

Cheers,

The link isn't clickable. You have to copy and paste the url into
another window, then it works. And like what was said, it's a nice
picture of a balding guy lighting his pipe with a zippo, a beer at his
side. Basically you're average ASP reader.

I like that guy's style. I am descended from Ulstermen myself. Has
anyone been there for a visit? I hear it's nice now that the bombings
have more or less subsided.

Hi Alex,

Yes, I've been to Belfast and it's a nice place. Its just a question of
how to define "nice". If you like high fences around the police
stations, riot equipped armoured police cars, walls covered with
stuning IRA- or protestantinfluenced art or perhaps deserted areas
where once lived happy families. Then he place is just for you.
I was there in -97. I got some nice beer and an good adrenalin kick.

BTW. From my experience I would suggest not to go into wrong areas the
wrong time looking the wrong way. Then how to figure out how to manage?
Well, that's when the adrenalin comes in handy...

OK. This was -97. I'm sure it's a paradise now.

Is this how Finnish Belgians define "nice"? I was thinking of a place
with cute farmland and friendly people in pubs where smoking is
permitted ... I generally prefer my beer without the adrenalin, and if
I want to get shot/beaten there are plenty of places here in New York
where that can be achieved quickly and efficiently, without the
expensive flight.

Seriously though I've heard it's going through a bit of a renaissance.
I guess after the 70's and 80's there was nowhere to go but up.

Hi again,

Yes. Seriously speaking I think that too. The people there are
definitely friendly! There's a saying that in Ireland you get a friend
where ever you "lay your hat". That is true. But the people in Northern
Ireland, particularely Belfast, are even more open. So when the
situation now is calming down there I actually think it's a nice place.

As for the smoking I dont know. Northern Ireland is under UK rule so
there are different laws than in Irelnd. In -97 you could smoke in the
pubs but for example the cigarrettes (that I didn't smoke) was the most
expencive I had seen theen. Perhaps someone from UK could inform us
aboute the situation about smoking. In Ireland you could see a lot of
pipesmokers but not in Notrhern Ireland (well, in -97).
I hope my previous post didn't frighten you :-)

It didn't make me any more wary of going there than I already was. The
town that my ancestors are from (Enniskillen) is primarily known for an
IRA bombing on Remembrance Day in 1987 that killed 11 people.

I'm not too worried about the price of cigarettes, although it's worth
pointing out that an Irish brand (Major) is one of the best in the
world, right up there with Shepeard's Hotel.
