Discussion:
Bad Reaction To Perique

I've recently expeanded my repertoire this year from being a strictly
aromatic smoker to now enjoying Virginias (especially the McClelland
variety) and even some English blends.

One thing I have noticed: now matter what blends I try - from Three
Nuns to St. James Woods to anything and everyting in between: if it
has Perique, I get a bad reaction to it. It can range from a feeling
of the blahs to a headache to (once) nausea.

Some other friends of mine who, like myself enjoy the richness of
Virginias, also can't take perique.

Anyone else have this happen to them? Anyone want to venture a guess
why?

It's amazing: no matter what the tobacco is, if it has Perique in it I
just get sick from it.

Obviously the answer is not to smoke any perique blends; I'm just
wondering if others get this reaction....

TO be honest, I love perique. I add quite a bit into my Cajun Half and
Half. I have never had any bad reaction to it. I have had several
folks say that it gives them a headache, but I can smoke that stuff all
day. I guess your reaction to it just means that there will be more
perique for me to smoke ;-)

I love perique, and I've been smoking for about a month now, The only thing
I cant smoke is heavily cased tobbacos(like Captain Black) , No Matter how
hard I try to smoke slowly , My Throat gets irritated and I feel like
gagging and being choked to death, I got some Quality tobacco from
Bufflehead, David Winsdor is a Great Guy and set up a Beginner(me) with some
sampler of fine tobbacos: "Mallard" straight Virgina great stuff ,This and
"King Eider"awesome(Virgina/Perique) I toggle between 50/50 .
I like the bold "pepper" towards the end of "King Eider's" I really enjoy
it.I requested some #965 and Im not sorry I Did,I like the latakia every
other day.He also send me some mild aromatics "Old Squaw" and "Masked Duck"
both great tobaccos I smoke a bowl of these a day, At first I had only 1 DR
Grabow and anything I would smoke in it would cause me to gag. now I have
another Dr Grabow and a tiny meer. so 3 in rotation , My throat isn't
getting irritated as much I guess because the pipes have more time to dry
out.Im going to slowy gather some more pipes.
So Thats my first post and introduction.

Thank You for the Greetings.
Im mostly a lurker to see what tobaccos people smoke.I just bought an
estate kaywoodie off of ebay for 9 bux! so that will be 4 in rotation
It will be my first decent pipe I guess :/
My Brother hadn't smoked his DR Grabow in about 8 years ,He gave me it me ,
with a 8 year old pouch of Mixture 79!.
I was smoking Ayc grenadiers up until that time. And to tell you the truth
even that crappy concoction of 79 had more flavor than
the cigars, after that I got a pouch of scandinavik regular cav at
walgreens, I was hooked. The Rest is History.

Dave,

I love Perique. But I've heard of others who react as you do. You are not
alone.

Dave, it's caused by all that goopy crap you've been smoking the last 20+ years :-)

See you in Newark,

I have several friends that can't handle either Perique or latakia - all to
varying degrees of bad reactions. Maybe it's just an allergic reaction? At
any rate, you're not alone...

You're not alone.

I've seen the effect of perique in action. My wife has a serious
reaction to it every single time ... so much so that I don't smoke it in
the house anymore.

I've been perique-free for many months now. Even though it used to be a
regular part of my tobacco rotation, I have to admit that it now smells
a bit gamey.

One thing you can try is to smoke a blend that contains a very small
amount of perique (e.g. Mac Baren's Roll Cake) and then work your way up
to stouter blends if successful. However, if it disagrees with your
body chemistry, it's better to just avoid it altogether.

Hadn't thought about this in years.

A young man who worked for me wanted to get off cig's, so he bought a pipe.
Drug store tobac. a couple of weeks later he commented that mine (heavy
perique) smelled so good, could he try it. Of course. Half hour later he
was in my office, he was woozy, wanted to pass out, and asking what is in
that stuff anyway?

I can't claim any real authority in the matter, since I hadn't ever
heard of anything like you're describing, BUT I did smoke some pure
blending perique on a dare, and I felt as though someone squirted
pepper spray in my mouth. I never realized I could create so much
mucous... My ears burned, my throat burned, my tongue burned... It
was some seriously potent stuff!
